Granny squares are classic motifs and there are endless possibilities to use them from coasters to sweatshirts. Can be done with any weight yarn using its according hook, they are worked in rows always having wrong and right side, since you don't turn the work.
The skill level varies from easy to difficult, the Venetian Star is an intermediate level motif/granny square.
Beginning popcorn (beg pc): Ch 3 (count as dc), 4 dc in same st or sp, drop loop from hook, insert hook in 3rd ch of beg ch3, pick up the dropped loop and draw through.
Popcorn (pc): 5 dc in same st or sp, drop loop from hook, insert hook in first 5 dc just made, pick up the dropped loop and draw through.
ch 4, join with a sl st to form a ring
Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), 11 dc in ring, join with a sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch3 (12 dc)
Round 2: beg pc in first st, (ch 1, pc) in each of next 2 dc, * ch 5, (1 pc, ch 1) in each of next 2 dc, 1 pc in next dc, rep from * twice, ch 5, join with a sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch3
Round 3: sl st in next ch 1 sp, beg pc in first sp, ch 1, 1 pc in next ch 1 sp, *ch 2, 5 dc in next ch 5 sp, ch 2**, 1 pc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1, 1 pc in next ch 1 sp, rep from * twice, rep from * to ** once, join with a sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch3
Round 4: sl st in next ch 1 sp, beg pc in first sp, *ch 3, sk next ch 2 sp, (1 dc, ch 1) in each of next 2 dc, (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) in next dc, (ch 1, 1 dc) in each of next 2 dc, ch 3, sk next ch 2 sp **, 1 pc in next ch 1 sp, rep from * twice, rep from * to ** once, join with a sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch 3
Round 5: Ch 3, *3 dc in next ch 3 sp, [1 dc in next dc, 1 dc in next ch 1 sp] 3 times, (2 dc, ch 3, 2dc) in next dc (corner), [1 dc in next ch 1 sp, 1 dc in next dc] 3 times, 3 dc in next ch 3 sp **, dc in next pc, rep from * twice, rep from ** once, 1 sc in ech of next 11 dc, join with a sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch3
Round 6: ch 1, starting in same st, 1 sc in each of next 12 dc, *(2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in next ch 3 sp (corner)**, 1 sc in each of next 23 dc, rep from * twice, rep from * to ** once, 1 sc in each of next 11 dc, join with a sl st in first sc, fasten off.
